Philip J. Landrigan, M.D., M.Sc.

Philip J. Landrigan, M.D., M.Sc., is the Ethel H. Wise Professor and Chair of the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine and Director of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Additionally at Mount Sinai, Dr. Landrigan is a professor of pediatrics. Dr. Landrigan is also the director of the Mount Sinai Center for Children's Health and the Environment, established in 1998. A national environmental health expert, he has served as Senior Advisor on Children's Health to the Administrator of the U.S. Environment Protection Agency and is responsible for establishing the EPA's Office of Children's Health Protection in 1997. For two years prior, from 1995 to 1997, Dr. Landrigan served on the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Gulf War Veteran's Illnesses.

 

Dr. Landrigan is a current member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and has chaired its committees on Environmental Neurotoxicology and the landmark study: Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children. Dr. Landrigan, released in 1993. He is also the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.

Regionally, he is the Chair of the New York State Asbestos Advisory Board and also chairs the New York State Advisory Council on Lead Poisoning Prevention.

He has served on the Mayor's Advisory Committee to Prevent Childhood Lead Paint Poisoning of the New York City's Department of Health.

A champion of educating parents on children's environmental health protections he is the author of 101 Ways to Raise Healthy Children in a World of Toxins due to be published by Rodale Press in Fall, 2001. This is a practical guide for parents and others on protecting children against lead, asbestos, radon, pesticides and other environmental toxins. He also is the co-author of Raising Children Toxic Free. published in 1995, by Avon Press.

Dr. Landrigan communicates clearly and effectively to both public and professional audiences. He frequently appears on television morning shows related to children's health and is often quoted in national newspapers and magazines.
