Spokespeople | Partners | Allies Olivia Newton-John <<Back to Spokespeople Olivia Newton-John is the national spokesperson for the Children's Health Environmental Coalition (CHEC) which she helped launch in 1992. For more than a decade she has been a personal friend of Nancy and Jim Chuda and was godmother to their only child, Colette, who died at the age of five from a non-hereditary childhood cancer in 1991. Upon Colette's passing, Olivia and Nancy's special bond as mothers awakened in them the need for a unified grassroots effort that would place children in the center of the environmental health movement and four years later, CHEC was created. As an active member of the CHEC Board of Directors, Olivia's steadfast devotion and shared commitment to CHEC's mission and goals have enabled the organization to receive global attention and international support. Her contributions of time and talent to CHEC have been significant and far-reaching. Last year, she produced Jubilation 2000, a private concert for CHEC supporters that featured her with Kenny Loggins, Clint Black, and Jim Brickman. The funds raised at this event helped to launch CHEC's Environmental Childproofing Campaign, a national educational outreach effort. She collaborated on the creation and production of the campaign's first educational video: "Not Under My Roof: Protecting Your Baby From Toxins At Home." In the video aimed at educating new parents, Olivia, Kelly Preston and Kelly's daughter Ella Bleu, stress the importance of creating a toxin-free home and demonstrate how to do so. Olivia's public appeal has proven timeless. Her career has spanned more than three decades. She is the recipient of four Grammies, numerous CMA, AMA and Peoples Choice awards, five #1 hits and 15 top 10 singles and recently an Emmy for her songwriting. Her film career took off in 1978 opposite John Travolta in Grease, which has become a much-loved classic. Throughout her diverse career, Olivia has danced with Gene Kelly in Xanadu, hosted the internationally syndicated Wild Life television show, and has been bestowed an OBE (Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth. She has served as Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Environmental Program. Olivia continues to give back to the community generously and has been acknowledged many times by charitable and environmental organizations, among them the American Red Cross, the Environmental Media Association, the Women's Guild of Cedar's Sinai Medical Center, the Rainforest Alliance and Concept Cure. As a breast cancer survivor, she has become increasingly well known and respected for talking openly about her battle with breast cancer and for promoting public awareness of the importance of early detection. She has appeared at breast-cancer benefits and events and is a positive inspiration to millions of people battling cancer. In the new millennium, her international recognition has continued to grow. She was invited by the Vatican on behalf of Pope John Paul II to perform at the Jubilee Celebration for the Sick and Healthcare Workers. Additionally, she sang a duet "Dare to Dream" with fellow Australian John Farnham at the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics to an estimated global viewing audience of four billion people. The year 2000 also marked the debut of Olivia's first solo live album: "One Woman's Life Journey", which features 21 of her greatest hits. Inspirational, modest and articulate, Ms. Newton-John is most of all a dedicated mom to her 15 year-old daughter Chloe. She is an outstanding spokesperson for CHEC and an excellent role model as a mother, an environmentalist and a humanitarian. Contact Information: |
