Joe Henry's Emmy-nominated lyrics have been performed in nearly eighty recordings, in films and television specials and series, and provided the text for One World/One Child, a book of international photography. His works for the stage were devised from his novel-in-progress, Lime Creek, and his poetry and lyrics performed by distinguished actor Anthony Zerbe.

In 1992, Henry received a Creative Fellowship Award in Fiction from the Colorado Council on the Arts; in 1993, the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts; and in 1994, a National Conservation Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation, for "the celebration of the natural world in his work."
