In May 2001, CHEC launched a National Environmental Childproofing Campaign. The campaign's goal is to expand the universally accepted idea of "childproofing" one's home to include preventive practices that limit exposure to toxic substances in and around the house and to make those practices as commonplace in our culture as putting safety latches on cabinets and plastic covers over electrical outlets.

Through this campaign CHEC also hopes to create an informed, grassroots constituency of parents willing to work together to support organizational initiatives, public policies and industry practices that focus on prevention of potential environmental health risks to children in schools and in the community at large.

CHEC intends to reach out to the parents of almost 4 million babies born throughout the US each year, during pregnancy and following birth. The campaign will also target parents with young children.
